1954 Bio Note 
Dr. Chilver was educated at the University of Bristol where he graduated in 1947 and was awarded the Albert Fry Prize. After a short period as a civil engineering assistant with the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, he returned to Bristol University in 1948 to carry out research on the strength of thin-walled steel struts, for which work he was subsequently awarded a Ph.D. degree.
In 1950 he was appointed assistant lecturer in civil engineering at Bristol University, where he continued work on structural problems, and was later appointed lecturer. In October 1954, Dr. Chilver was appointed demonstrator in engineering at Cambridge University.
