Admiralty Signal Establishment

From Graces Guide

1917 An "experimental department" was established by the Admiralty at H.M. Signal School Whale Island to coordinate research work undertaken since 1896 on the Torpedo School ships HMS Defiance and HMS Vernon

By 1921 there was an ASDIC Section of the Admiralty Signal School[1]

1940 Robert Sutton, an expert in vacuum tube design, developed a tuneable version of the klystron which had been invented in the late 1930s in the USA.

1941 The Admiralty Signal Establishment (ASE) was formed at Haslemere, mainly from the Experimental Department of HM Signal School.

1941 ASE developed the Type 271 radar based on the reflex kystron, based on Sutton’s concept; this was the Navy's first microwave radar.

1948 The Admiralty Signal and Radar Establishment was formed at Portsmouth bringing together ASE and related fields of research.
