Air Call

From Graces Guide

1957 Telephone Answering Services was established by John Stanley

1970 Telephone Answering Services Ltd changed its name to Air Call Ltd

1980 Converted into a public company

1982 A consortium involving Air Call, Cable and Wireless and Telephone Rentals was refused a licence for "cellular radio"[1] - instead licences were granted to Cellnet and Racal. At this time Air Call had about 10,000 paging sets and 10,000 2-way radio sets (used in cars).

1983 Acquired Teledata

1983 Granted a 12-year licence to expand its mobile radio communications network, which would allow automatic connection with the network rather than relying on an operator. "Something we have been after for 30 years" according to Walter Stevenson, a director.[2]

c.1993 Acquired by Vodafone
