"ALFRED EWING, whose death in his sixty-ninth year occurred on 18th August 1950, was for thirty-seven years the chairman and managing director of the Climax Rock Drill and Engineering Works, Ltd., Cornwall and London, and was also the principal of Messrs. Alfred Ewing and Company, consulting engineers. He received his general education at the Renfrew Grammar School and gained his technical knowledge at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, the Coatbridge Mining School, and Paisley Technical College. On the completion of a six years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Edward Chester and Company, Ltd., Renfrew, in 1905, he continued in the service of that firm for a further fourteen years as chief engineer, with responsibility for the design of mining plant. He was also concerned on the firm's behalf with Messrs. Valour Rubber Machines, Ltd., as technical director and was their representative on the board of the Gouria Oil Syndicate, Ltd. Mr. Ewing interested himself in the commercial side of a number of other engineering concerns and was responsible for the reorganization of Messrs. Robey and Company, Ltd., Lincoln, and Messrs. Sanderson Brothers and Newbould, Ltd., Sheffield. Other positions he held were those of managing director of Messrs. Sandycroft, London, and a seat on the board of Messrs. John Kenyon and Company, Sheffield. He had been a Member of the Institution since 1944."
