ARTHUR JOHN HUGHES, C.I.E., born in 1843, died at Eastbourne on the 9th March, 1910.

Trained under his father, the late Mr. John Hughes, he went to India in 1862, and during a career of 34 years in the Public Works Department, he filled important administrative offices, and will be especially remembered in connection with the great engineering works for the drainage and water-supply of Calcutta, Allahabad, Cawnpore and other cities.

Mr. Hughes was elected a Member of The Institution on the 6th December, 1881.
