1893 'GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY EXTENSION— TAPLOW TO TWYFORD.— On the 7th inst. occupation of the main line was given to Mr. Mackay, the contractor, when Messrs. Batting, of the Maidenhead Iron Works, successfully hoisted the two massive main girders into position for a new wrought iron bridge which they are now erecting across the main line at 27 miles 45 chains. Owing to the favourable weather, &c., the work was accomplished and the workmen cleared off the site by 2 p.m. We understand that occupation has been arranged again for the 14th inst., for lifting main girders (about 16 tons each), at 28 miles 90 chains, where the cutting is much deeper. This will make the tenth bridge erected. The girders are raised by means of Mr. Mackay's locomotive engines, working from his temporary line. Chief Inspector Noble will again be in charge of the line.'[1]
