Brassey and Ogilvie

1830s: After his move to Cheshire, Alexander Ogilvie met Thomas Brassey, with whom he was ever afterwards associated. Soon after they met they formed a partnership which lasted for the rest of their lives. This happened when both were invited to tender for a large contract but Mr. Brassey said to Mr. Ogilvie 'It’s no use making two bites of a cherry; let’s go in together, or one of us retire.'
Managing Agents for the Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway, a branch 12.4 miles long, from the Newton Abbot station of the South Devon line.
Every one of the numerous contracts they jointly undertook was financially successful.
