Whisky distillers and blenders, of Leith

1815 The earliest claimed date of establishment, though the year of 1820 is also stated on the label of some bottles. There is reason to favour 1847 as the starting date of the business in its modern form, free from antecedents, as Charles Mackinlay and Company. It was in that year that the firm of Mackinlay and Deans, trading as merchants and general agents at 104 Constitution Street, was dissolved

1847 The Original Mackinlay was registered as the most enduring of the company's brands

1892 Mackinlays, together with John Birnie, built Glen Mhor distillery, Inverness,

1907 Sir Ernest Shackleton took 25 cases of Mackinlay's Rare Old Highland Malt on his Antarctic expedition, some of which survived to be rediscovered a century later and to provide inspiration for several modern blends

In the 20th century Mackinlays introduced further brands, ML (Mackinlay Legacy) and VOB (Very Old Blended)

1944 The business was incorporated as a private limited company

1961 The company was taken over by Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Limited and the Original Mackinlay became the house blend for their estate of public houses

1985 Invergordon Distillers acquired Mackinlays from Scottish and Newcastle Breweries

1993 Invergordon were in turn taken over by Whyte and Mackay Limited, who thus acquired the Mackinlay brand
