Edward Butler was born in 1903 and on leaving school was apprenticed to Rolls-Royce, Derby.

After completing his apprenticeship, he was appointed to the Experimental Staff of the Company, and it was while carrying out road tests in France that he met his death as the result of a skid.

He died in March, 1928, at the age of twenty-five.

He was elected a Graduate of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1922.
