Elliott Brothers: Micrometers
Note: This is a sub-section of Elliott Brothers
Elliott Brothers produced pocket micrometers for sale. They followed the pattern patented by Jean Laurent Palmer in 1848.
The date when Elliott started production has not been established, but an example was featured in 'Workshop Appliances' by P. B. S. Shelley in 1873 (and in subsequent editions), where he describes it as a 'thousandth gauge' (it was graduated with divisions corresponding to 1/1000th of an inch). See here.
Some of the screwed spindles had pitch errors, and a correction was made by engraving the fiducial line accordingly. In fact such a correction can be seen in the small sketch in Shelley's book.
It has not been established when Elliott Bros ended production. They would not have been able to compete with the high quality micrometers produced on a very large scale in the USA by Brown and Sharpe and others.
