1860 Company founded [1]. The Company was first incorporated as the Gloucester Wagon Co. Isaac Slater was appointed as the first general manager of the works, which was reportedly the first concern to carry on manufacturing operations under the provisions of the limited liability acts.

1868 orders were received from Russia of sufficient magnitude to justify the use of assembly works at Riga for a number of years.

1876 the first major extension of the company's site was made.

1888 Public company. The company was re-registered on 14 September, as Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Co
