Late 1800s: under Sir William Roberts-Austen, Jenkins with William Henry Merrett and Alfred Stansfield carried out an immense amount of pioneer experimental work which was represented in a very condensed form in the Reports of the Alloys Research Committee, a body set up on the initiative of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
