1884 The Highgate cable tramway was opened by the Highgate Steep Grade Tramways and Works Co; the tramway had been constructed by the Patent Cable Tramways Corporation; J. Bucknall Smith was the constructing engineer; it was the first application of the cable tramway system in Europe
1892 As a result of an accident the cable tramway stopped operation
1893 the repairs took several months' the company was thought to be insolvent; a new company had been established to continue the operations but restarting required approval of the local authorities
1896 The company was registered on June 15th. 
1897 Restarted cable operations.
1906 the Highgate Steep Grade Tramways and Works Co was closed after the police refused to renew its licence until the carriages had been put into proper state of repair
