1905 An Illuminating Engineering Society was founded in the USA
1909 The Illuminating Engineering Society was established on February 9 at an informal dinner at the Criterion Restaurant of 25 people with interests in illumination engineering, organised by Leon Gaster.
1909 November: The inaugural meeting of the I.E.S. was held in the rooms of the Royal Society of Arts. The first president was Prof. Silvanus P. Thompson; there were 157 members. The Honorary Secretary was Leon Gaster; J. S. Dow, who had been associated with Gaster from the time of the inception of the journal, also took a full share in the work of running the Society.
1917 A. P. Trotter was appointed President of the Society
1928 Clifford C. Paterson was appointed president
1977 Merged with the Institution of Heating and Ventilating Engineers to form The Chartered Institution of Building Services.
