1874 James Lyle Mackay joined the Calcutta-based merchant and agency firm of Mackinnon, Mackenzie and Co.
By 1890s Mackay had become a partner in the firm. He had also begun a personal investment portfolio, buying major shareholdings in Indian tea estates, textile firms and two river steamer companies.
1958 The various Inchcape holdings were rationalised; those that were retained were incorporated in a single publicly quoted company based in London - Inchape Group.
The group expanded very rapidly, both by the development of existing companies and their range of activities, and by the purchase of other groups.
1967 Acquired the Borneo Company Limited
1972 Acquired Dodwell and Company Limited
1973 Acquired Mann, Egerton and Co
1973 Established Labtest Hong Kong top support the Dodwell companies
1975 Acquired Anglo-Thai Corporation
1980 Acquired Assam Company Limited.
1981 Renamed Inchcape plc
1987 Formed a specific testing business stream, Inchcape Testing Services.
1996 MBO of Inchcape Testing Services.
