James Charles Potter

James C. Potter was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1855. He was apprenticed to H. J. H. King and Co, and later joined the engineering department of the Anchor Line Steamship Co in Glasgow, and from there went to the Vale of Clyde Engineering Works, of Glasgow. He emigrated to the USA in 1874. In 1887 he started the Potter and Atherton Machine Company in Pawtucket. In 1893 he organized and was later President of the Howard and Bullough (American Machine Co). In 1898 he sold out his interest, and retired. However, 6 months later, he established the Potter & Johnston Machine Company, of Pawtucket with John Johnston.[1] [2]
