of Salford, a small textile-chain making business

1863 Listed as 'Salter, James, Mill finisher and chain manufacturer. Ordsal Lane Chain Works. House, 21 Peel St, Salford.'[1]

1862 Patent. '3073. To John Schofield Clegg, of Oldham, in the county of Lancaster, and James Slater, of the same place, Machinists, for the invention of "certain improvements in carding engines."'[2]

1864 Patent. '2515. To James Slater, of Salford, in the county of Lancaster, Chain Maker, for the invention of "improvements in toothed chains for working toothed or chain wheels."'[3] Slater introduced the roller into chains. Prior to this time transmission chain consisted of only pins and plates

1866 Patent. '2907. And Samuel Hand, of Hulme, and James Slater, of Salford, both in the county of Lancaster, have given the like notice in respect of the invention of "improvements in railway signals."'[4]

1866 June. 'Yesterday afternoon a trial of a patent for providing more ready means of communication between railway passengers and guards, took place at the Patent Chain Works, belonging to the inventors. Messrs. Hand and Slater....[description of device]'[5]

1879 Listed as 'Slater, James, mill furnisher and maker of all kinds of chains for cotton, flax, woollen and print works,etc. Ordsal Lane Patent Chain Works, Woden St, Salford'[6]

1879 Hans Renold purchased James Slater's business, a small textile-chain making business in Salford, which became the basis for his chain making company

1883 Listed 'Slater and Unsworth, chain makers and mill furnishers, Ordsal Lane Patent Chain Works, Woden St, Ordsal Lane, Salford'[7] Note: Not found in 1886 directory
