1872 John Grant Birch started the business as an engineer and iron merchant in Liverpool. Held numerous agencies, moving on to an export business and represented foreign engineers.

1888 Issued large catalogue of Railroads and rolling stock. Possibly an agent. [1]

1890 The main business was moved to London. The work included a long series of major contracts concerning railway and marine engineering.

1891 Released a catalogue of their galvanised, corrugated and flat sheet iron. [2]
