Joseph Garland (1805-1891) of Dundee, "The Oldest Shipbuilder in Scotland,"

1891 Obituary [1]

The decease of Mr. Joseph Garland, of Dundee, where he was born in 1805, and who was a shipbuilder by trade, has also to be recorded.

His experience as a shipbuilder was very varied and extensive. For a time he had the management of a shipbuilding business on the St. Lawrence, and after coming home he was engaged in business in Dundee and Newburg-on-Tay.

Besides being a practical shipbuilder he was an inventor, and for some time he was a director in two Dundee steam shipping companies.
