1857 The company was formed by John Watkins Brett in order to link Malta with the French and Italian land systems via a cable from Sardinia to Malta.
R. S. Newall and Co were contracted to manufacture and lay the cable, which ran from Sardinia to Malta and on to Corfu.
Later a cable was laid from Corfu to Otranto, Italy.
