Born in Pickering, Yorkshire, the son of Robert (a land surveyor) and Mary Clark King.
In October 1793 he emigrated to the America with his friend, astronomer Joshua John Moore. They reached New York in January 1794. King then moved to Philadelphia, to work for Robert Morris as a surveyor and draughtsman. In 1796, he moved to Washington. He became Surveyor of the city of Washington, D.C.
His son-in-law, Major William Wade, U.S. Army ordnance officer, became a partner in steam engine and cannon foundries in Pittsburgh.
