Nicol and his wife Christian Pringle had 9 children.

1773 Appointed toll collector on the sea lock linking the Forth and Clyde Canal to the River Carron.

1779 Appointed Surveyor on the Forth and Clyde Canal, after the previous Surveyor died.

1807 Died; his son Hugh took over his position on the canal.
