Oliver Evan Yeo (1886-1948)
1949 Obituary
"OLIVER EVAN YEO was a well-known figure in the gas industry and had been a director of Messrs. Tully, Sons and Company, Ltd., gas engineers and contractors, of Newark, Notts, since its formation.
He was born in 1886 and received his technical education at the Northern and Regent Street Polytechnics, London. On the conclusion of a three years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Stevens and Samson, engineers and founders, of Taunton, in 1904, he was employed as a draughtsman by Messrs. Biggs Wall and Company, gas plant engineers, and subsequently acted as works manager. He then became chief draughtsman and designer to Messrs. Methane-Hydrogen Gas Plants, Ltd., with the additional duties of chief assistant to the late Mr. C. B. Tully, consulting gas engineer, London. In 1913 he entered into partnership with the latter, the firm trading as Bale and Hardy, manufacturers of Tully's Complete Gasification Plant.
It was largely through his efforts, over a long period of years, that the mechanical operation of these and similar plants was developed. He became a director of the present company in 1926 and as engineer was personally responsible for the design and construction of the firm's combined coal gasification and water gas plant. He continued to hold office until his death, which occurred on 27th September 1948. Mr. Yeo had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1929."
