This line linked to the Llanidloes and Newtown Railway and opened fully in 1861.

In 1863 it joined with the Oswestry, Ellesmere and Welshpool Railway, the Llanidloes and Newtown Railway and the Newtown and Machynlleth Railway to form Cambrian Railways
