1965 US management consultancy McKinsey was brought in to review the Plessey Co; the businesses were divided into Groups, one of which was Telecommunications. Plessey Telecommunications would incorporate Ericsson Telephones and Automatic Telephone and Electric Co.
1977 Sites at Fleming Road, Speke, Liverpool, and Eldon Street, South Shields, and at Carr Lane, Chorley, North Hylton Road, Sunderland and Wilson Road, Huyton.
1988 GEC and Plessey merged their telecommunications businesses as GEC Plessey Telecommunications, commonly known as GPT. GPT was a world leader in many fields, for example Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) technology, and this brought the two companies responsible for developing and building the System X telephone exchange together, which was supposed to make selling System X simpler.
