C.1918 A tank-bridging battalion of the Royal Engineers was formed at Christchurch
Post-WWI It became an experimental establishment.
Giffard Le Quesne Martel developed the Martel box girder bridge, which became the standard army girder bridge, replacing the more expensive, less adaptable tubular girder bridge, and the Royal Engineers' tank, predecessor of the AVRE (armoured vehicle Royal Engineers).[1]
