1962 Obituary
Mr S. S. Dawes, who died recently at the age of 71, spent all his life working for the motor industry.
He served an apprenticeship with John Atterton, Haverhill, Suffolk, and after he had gained experience with a number of firms, he joined the Royal Aircraft Establishment in 1916 as a Process Inspector.
From 1919 until 1934, he worked with a firm of automobile distributors, eventually becoming Managing Director and Secretary of the Company. In 1935 he joined, and subsequently acquired, a distribution and servicing business in Southampton.
Throughout his career he was closely associated with the Institute of the Motor Industry and from 1943-46 he was its President. He retired from business in 1946 and devoted all his time, in a voluntary capacity, to that Institute. In 1950 he was again elected its President and remained in office until 1960. He was then given the title of President Emeritus in recognition of his work. His chief concern throughout this time was the education of young automobile engineers.
In the recent New Year Honours list he was awarded an O.B.E. in recognition of this work.
Mr Dawes became a Member of this Institution in 1947. He was a prominent member of the Automobile Division and had many friends among its members.
