STANLEY BROTHERHOOD was chairman of Messrs. Peter Brotherhood, Ltd., of Peterborough. His father, Peter Brotherhood, M.I.Mech.E., was the son of Rowland Brotherhood, who was associated with Brunel during the construction of the Great Western Railway. After receiving his education at Charterhouse and University College, London, Stanley Brotherhood served his apprenticeship, first in the Crewe works of the London and North Western Railway, and during 1896-7 at Birkenhead, in Messrs. Cammell Laird and Company's shipyard.

In 1897 he entered the London works of his father's firm, then situated south of the Thames, near Westminster Bridge, and when his elder brother died in 1899 he was appointed general manager. Three years later, on the death of his father, he became sole owner, and took over the management of the business, which was subsequently moved to Peterborough. The firm was made into a limited liability company in 1907, with Mr. Brotherhood as governing director; he subsequently became chairman and held this position until his death, which occurred in London, on 8th May 1938, in his sixty-third year.

He was keenly interested in the financial and administrative side of the business of the firm, which was reconstituted as a public company in 1937. He was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1901, and was transferred to Membership in 1905.
