Steel Barrel Scammells and Associated Engineers

From Graces Guide

of Scammell Works, London E1

1936 Public Company incorporated to acquire the 3 constituent companies[1] which would be managed by their existing management.

1941 Subsidiary companies were The Steel Barrel Co Ltd, G. Scammell and Nephew Ltd and Carrimore Six Wheelers Ltd[2]

1965 Steel Barrel Co closed with existing orders dealt with by other companies in the group.

1966 The three main companies in the group were Anthony Hoists Ltd., of Ruislip; Carrimore Six Wheelers Ltd., of Finchley; and Autolifts and Engineering Ltd., of Blackburn. They were moved to a single new factory on the Harelaw Trading Estate, Stanley, Co. Durham.

Blackburn remained as a manufacturing and fitting unit; a new fitting and service depot in Tottenham replaced Ruislip; and a new, smaller factory was set up at Carluke, Lanarkshire, which devotes much of its time to equipping BMC chassis from nearby Bathgate.

Midland Tipper Services Ltd. at Chesterfield remains as it was.[3]

1969 The initials SBS were widely used, standing for the Steel Barrel Scammells and Associated Engineers Ltd.
