Troughton and Simms
Troughton & Simms, instrument makers, of London.
Edward Troughton (1756-1835) had learned his trade from his uncle, John Troughton, a leading instrument maker in London; he also worked with his equally talented brother, John Troughton (1739-1807).
1826 Troughton took William Simms, an excellent craftsman and businessman, into partnership; Troughton and Simms manufactured mathematical instruments both large and small, and attracted customers around the world.
The twentieth century brought important changes to Troughton and Simms.
1916 The firm became Troughton and Simms, Ltd.
1922 The company merged with T. Cooke and Sons, part of Vickers, to form Cooke, Troughton and Simms which became a wholly owned subsidiary of Vickers.
1963 Became part of the new company, Vickers Instruments, in business until 1988.
