William Roland Tebbs (c1919-1947)
1949 Obituary
"WILLIAM ROLAND TEBBS, who lost his life from drowning on 23rd April 1947, at the early age of 28, was elected a Student of the Institution in 1937, was transferred to Graduateship in 1943, and to Associate Membership in 1945.
On the conclusion of a five years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Head Wrightson and Company, Ltd., of Stockton-on-Tees, in 1939, he joined H.M. Forces and after a period of training at the School of Survey was posted to the 2nd Survey Regiment, Royal Artillery. On his return to England after the evacuation in 1941 from Dunkirk he was promoted to the rank of sergeant, 1st class surveyor, but in the same year he took his discharge on the grounds of ill-health.
Since then he had been in the employment of Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., at Billingham, first as a technical assistant and latterly as a draughtsman and designer with responsibility for the design of special equipment and apparatus for research. He continued in this work until the regrettably tragic ending of his brief career."
