. . . He received his first commission in the corps of Royal Engineers on the 20th of August, 1866, and spent the usual two years' course of study at Chatham.
From February 1868 to October 1869 he served on the fortifications at Portland and Weymouth. He was then transferred to India, where, from January 1871 to the end of his career, he was exclusively employed on railway work; first as an assistant engineer on the Indus Valley State Railway, then as deputy consulting engineer to the Government of India in the railway department. Subsequently he was posted to the account branch railway department, and officiated, first at Lahore and afterwards at Calcutta, as deputy examiner of accounts. At the time of his death he was officiating as deputy consulting engineer to the Government of India for guaranteed railways. . . .
