John Anderson Kelly (1891-1947)

1949 Obituary [1]

"JOHN ANDERSON KELLY spent most of his professional career in India. He was born in 1891 and received his education at Robert Gordon's College, Aberdeen, in which town he also served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Hall, Russell and Company, Ltd., shipbuilders, from 1907 to 1912. After gaining experience in general engineering and constructional work under the Government of New South Wales he was employed from 1915 to 1920 by the British India Steam Navigation Co as marine engineer, and during this period passed the examination for the Board of Trade's second-class engineer's certificate; he also served for a year in the Royal Naval Reserve with the rank of engineer sub-lieutenant. On the completion of a short engagement as assistant installation manager in Bombay for the Standard Oil Co, of New York, he became head mechanical assistant to the chief engineer of the Bombay Improvement Trust with the charge of plant and workshops. In 1926 he entered the service of the Sind Government as executive engineer in the mechanical division of the Public Works Department, and for a period was employed as works manager in the Lloyd Barrage workshops. He relinquished this appointment ten years later and retired. He emerged, however, from his retirement in 1942 and became attached to the Demolition and Recovery Directorate of the Ministry of Works at Aberdeen. Mr. Kelly, whose death occurred in October 1947, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1936."
