Attended Owens College, Manchester, and London University (B.Sc. 1872).

1872 Admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge

1874 Graduated B.A. (3rd Wrangler)

1878-80 Fellow of the college.

1880-14 Professor of Physics at Birmingham University

1888 Admitted to the Royal Society

1899 President of Section A, of the British Association.
