1929 Formed to hold the provincial newspaper interests of United Newspapers:

  • Edinburgh Evening News
  • Yorkshire Evening News
  • Lancashire Daily Post
  • Blackburn Times
  • Doncaster Gazette
  • Burnley News
  • Preston Guardian
  • The Sporting Pink (Leeds)

In addition the company owned just under half the shares in a small group of daily and weekly newspapers based around Hull and Grimsby.

1948 Mr Harley Drayton was appointed chairman of Provincial Newspapers Ltd which he held until he died in 1966.
