Richard Edwin Houghton Hattersley (1877-1949)
He converted 2 cottages in Halifax into workshops
With the expansion of his business, he moved to larger premises in Springhall Lane, Halifax which he rented from Gaukroger, Sykes and Roberts.
At some point the company became R. E. Hattersley and Co
1897 Became secretary of Gaukroger, Sykes and Roberts.
1900 Gaukroger, Sykes and Roberts were in financial trouble; Hattersley took control and joined the 2 businesses together. He raised fresh capital and redirected the company towards high quality products that could be made and sold in large quantities.
1901 An engineer, tool maker, working on his own account, living with his mother and his sisters in Halifax
1902 Married Sarah Potter in Ormskirk, Lancashire.
Opened a small head office in Ormskirk (where he lived) even though the works remained in Halifax
1910 Arranged the merger with 3 other companies in similar areas of business to form United Brassfounders and Engineers.
1911 An engineer, living in Orsmkirk with his wife Sarah
1923 Purchased, from the receiver of the United Brassfounders and Engineers, the goodwill of the company, the land, buildings, plants, stocks, and the whole of the contents of the works at Halifax and Ormskirk, together with certain other assets.
Became chairman of Hattersley (Ormskirk) Ltd
1939 Richard E Hattersley, managing director, engineer, lived in West Lancashire with Sarah Hattersley
1949 He died on May 2 in Ormskirk, Lancashire, at the age of 71.
