Thomas Garnett (1766–1802), chemist and physician,

The first Chair created at the new Andersonian Institution in Glasgow was that of Chemistry and Natural Philosophy; it was occupied by Dr. Thomas Garnett

1799 Garnett left Glasgow on being appointed the first professor at the Royal Institution of Great Britain
