Thomas Picton Leather of Leather, Matthews and Co

c1835 Born in Pendleton son of Samuel Leather

1857 An engineer when he married Mary Harris in Rochdale[1]

1859 Birth of son Thomas Picton Leather junior in Didsbury[2]

1861 he was described in the census as an Engineer

1871 Described as a draughtsman living at 79 Woodbine Street. Salford, with Mary Leather 34, Thomas Leather 12, Frances Leather 10, Ada M Leather 8, Elizabeth Leather 6, Arthur Leather 3, Samuel Leather 1[3]

c.1871 formed a partnership with Thomas William Matthews

1875 Patent application by Josiah Richards and David Williams, both of Pontypool, in the county of Monmouth, and Thomas William Matthews, and Thomas Picton Leather, both of Broughton Road, Salford in the county of Lancaster, in respect of the invention of "improvements in apparatus employed in the manufacture of tin plate."[4]

1881 Thos. P. Leather 46, mechanical engineer, lived in Pendleton in Salford with Mary Leather 44, Thomas P. Leather 22, fitter in works, Frances E. Leather 20, Ada M. Leather 18, Elizabeth H. Leather 16, Arthur Leather 14, Samuel Leather 11, Lilian E. Leather 7, Arabella Leather 5, John W. Leather 3[5]

1881 he was "employed" as an engineer, and the census taker includes an abbreviated entry which appears to give his place of employment as a spinning mill. Thus Thomas P Leather's involvement as a partner in an engineering company appears to have been short-lived.

1891 Thomas P Leather 56, mechanical engineer, employee, lived in Cheetham with Mary Leather 54, Arthur Leather 23, Samuel Leather 21, Lillian Leather 17, Arabella Leather 15, William Leather 13[6]

1895 Died.
