WILLIAM JOHN JURES was educated and trained as a marine engineer, serving his apprenticeship at Messrs. Palmers' engine works at Jarrow-on-Tyne.

After spending three years as a journeyman fitter at Jarrow and Barrow-in-Furness, he joined the Red Star Line as a junior engineer in 1898.

Except for a short period with Messrs. Vickers, Sons and Maxim as charge engineer on a Japanese battleship, he remained with the Red Star Line out of Antwerp until 1906 and rose to the position of third engineer. He then joined the Law Accident Company as an engineering surveyor.

In 1907 he was transferred to the staff of the allied company, the United Legal Indemnity Insurance Society, and became responsible for the Manchester area.

In 1920 Mr. Jures was appointed to the head office engineering staff of the Yorkshire Insurance Company at Glasgow, having charge of the work of surveyors in the London and Midland districts until shortly before his death in 1928.

He became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1909, and was 54 years of age when he died.
